First Club Meeting of the Fall 2009 Semester

Once again, a big thanks to all those who made it to the club meeting. The meeting was short and sweet with 5 little ceaser's pizza disappearing just as fast as the meeting was over. In the meeting we covered 3 basic things:

Club Roster (we have 25 official members now!) and a call for anyone who would be interested in filling the VP and Secretary positions. We also mentioned that members who were interested could join the SPS, AIAA, and/or APS.
We briefly talked about the new point system that the 'Clubs and Organisations' are using and how that affects us (mostly we need the points to qualify for funding). Which leads into the next point made... Science Saturdays!
We have a table/room/something for 3-4 drop-in activities during the Ott Planetarium shows for "Science Saturdays" (for more info on Science Saturdays please go to http://weber.edu/planetarium). We will need at least 5 club members to come and help at some point during the afternoon. Plus the Signpost may be there so if you want to be in the picture that gets published, or quoted in the article, you'd have to be there. The tables will be open from 11:00 am to about 3:50 pm so we can be done by 4:00. Once again the only way this will count for points is if we have at least 5 people show up to help.

The only other thing I can think of was the addition of our new Physics Club email address which is probably where most of you got the email from, which contained the link to this blog, which is probably the reason you are reading this anyway.

Oh, Christmas Tree...

After several days of hard work, the Christmas tree is up and donated to the Christmas Tree Jubilee! We had a huge poster of the Eagle Nebula donate, a moon phase toy, and several space/astronomy books all donated!

Thank you to everyone who donated something, and a big, especial thanks to Dr. Inglefield, Dr. Armstrong, Diana, Randi, Wes, John B, John M, and Bryce for helping us pull it off!

We hope it sells well!

It's November 6th...

My how time seems to fly! It seems like yesterday we were flinging dry ice into the Weber pond.... Oh wait, no. That was today! No worries. No ducks were harmed in the making of this weeks minutes.
Here's the scoop on today's meeting....

No one signed up for the fun bus to Wendover.... But that doesn't stop the professors from partying! So the official trip is off, but you're still free to enjoy the weekend as you see fit.
T-shirts: sign up! They'll be about $10 and will show up next semester. IF YOU HAVE ANY COOL IDEAS- PLEASE SUBMIT THEM! Only one idea was submitted and I know we have more creativity then that.
Activities for the rest of the year will include...

Club Feud starting next week-

Tuesday, Nov 11, we will endeavor to win the mural contest by making the entire staircase from the science building down our beautiful work of art. Bigger is better! We'll cover it in complete nerdiness and all of our cool activities! If you have any time Tues, come and hang out! We have a lot of space to cover...
Tuesday is also Veteran's Day! So be patriotic and support our awesome troops!
The whole time we'll be taking pictures- because we get points and it's cool- so show some school spirit. If you have any purple stuff, wildcat stuff, or anything else stuff, show it off. (we'll get more points).
So what's with all these points? More points=more money for the club! We are going head to head with other clubs in a game of feud, Scene it, and an egg toss off a bridge. This last effort will happen on Nov. 15 from 9am-1pm. Guess what?! Free buffet lunch for those who come! Food, Money, Fun? Sounds good to me!

November the 20th will continue our regularly scheduled program. We will be decorating the Christmas Tree to donate to the Weber Festival of Trees. We'll have everything there, all you need to do is show up.
November 21 (day after tree decorating) is the Weber's Turkeys on Ice. From 8:30-10:30 there's free ice skating and turkey bowling (not with real turkeys). Did I mention it's free? Bring your friends and family- we'll have a ball.

December 5th is our Closet Pizza Party! It's the Friday of "Dead Week". The next week is finals. Ahhhh!!!! Where did the time go? It seems like we were just chucking pumpkins off the building yesterday....

If you're having a hard time keeping track of the weeks like me, there's hope for you! We'll be posting a 2 month schedule of our activities on the door of the Physic major's room so you can cease to wonder what cool activity is going on what day. In fact, we already have some good ideas for next semester...

First things first. We have a plan. It's a grand plan. In fact, it is a huge plan. It's a grandiose, GINORMOUS plan. It's a large, colossal, (I'm running out of big words) plan. It's so big- we need you to spread the word to make it happen. What would you say if I told you that we are working on getting Myth Busters to make an appearance at our very own Weber State! How cool would that be. Next Spring- if our beloved leader, The Dark Mistress, has her way. Stay Posted.
Another big event is our rocking service project. It's unlike any other service you've done. We're going to collaborate with the other science clubs to bring fun science labs to the junior highs and high schools around Weber. Here's the skinny.

Schools don't have money for labs. This means kids learn science out of a book. How Boring!
There are five science clubs at Weber, including our beloved physics club. Each club would be assigned a week. One day of that week, the club goes out with their cool science stuff and sets up a 40 min lab for the kids to to rotate through (as a class period). This equates to about 7 labs on that day.
So every 5 weeks, we'll go out with our physics toys and show kids just how cool science really is.
No one will have to stay the whole day- just for the time they can spare. Get enough volunteers and we'll have a rocking party with the kids! I think it sounds like a great idea and everyone should get involved in this one.
So gear up for Project Hands On Science. Coming your way next semester.

Whew! That's just about it. After all that talk, we needed to chill out by the pond and relax to the soothing sound of C02 bubbling in the pond. We'll have a video posted (check out YouTube as well), though the best part (Dr. Armstrong chasing the ducks away) will not be there. He, after all, has the video camera.

Punkin Seeds

We have some friends who have grown from our punkin' chunkin'! There are quite a few out there, so we're going to try and save them and grow them for next year's punkin' chunkin'! Save our club some mulah...

Alright labels and jellyspoons...

Punkin' Chunkin' has arrived!

On Thursday, October 23 at 2 pm on the South side of the Science Lab Building, we will be holding our first ever Punkin' Chunkin'! Woo!

You know you've always wanted to chunkin' a punkin' off the building... Everyone is welcome! Please come!

We will be carving punkins and chunkin' them off the Science lab building to demonstrate properties of gravity.

Punkins will be provided! If you feel the need to bring your own, please feel free!

Three prizes will be awarded for the following categories:

1. Most creative punkin' carved (bonus points for nerdy carvings)

2. Farthest thrown off the building

3. Most spectacular splat

There should probably be some rules to go along with this so things don't get out of hand...

Concerning the Carvings:

You may bring your own carving material, or be subject to the crappy quality knives poor college students bring.
Bonus prize awarded for the painting/carving of your favorite/least favorite professor.

Concerning the Farthest Thrown:

Punkins must be Chunkin'd over the five-foot barrier over the South side of the Science Lab building.
You MAY bring a contraption to throw them with (e.g. trebuchet, ROTC, flock of doves, etc)
Punkins will be measured in an approximately straight line from the SL building.

Concerning the contraption:

All contraptions must be legal.
All contraptions must be able to fit in the elevator and through a normal-sized doorway.
You must be able to move the contraption yourself (or with a partner if you're working with a partner).
If you need electrical power, you must give us advanced notice.
The right is reserved to not allow you to chunkin' if we feel your contraption is too dangerous.

Concerning the most spectacular splat:

The punkin must splat on the ground.
You may put outside materials inside the punkin' to make it splat better. This material may not send shrapnel flying of any kind.
Both splat diameter and theatrics will be considered in the awarding of the prizes.

I think that's enough rules.

Here’s what you missed in the fantabulous ½ an hour of floats and fun!

The Physics Club is Official! That means we have funding and everything!
We also have a cool website!....which you are already looking at right now.....
Next meeting heads up… literally! We have our Pumpkin Chunkin contest on 10/23.
We have 3 contests to contest for-- 1) Looks (we’re carving them you know), 2) Splats (we’re then throwing them off the building), and 3) Distance (chuckin' it the farthest from the top of the building. See contest rules posted on the website…)
Bring your own pumpkin or sign up on the white board in the major’s room (or you can email Diana at princessdye@gmail.com) and we’ll bring one for you.
Submit your ideas for demolition and club t-shirts in the box in the major’s room.
Signups for t-shirts will be at the next meeting, too! They should be less than $10.
Also, while you're at it, submit your favorite physics quotes, equations that you often use, or equations that you think are just plain cool. *(Note: We have plans to use these quotes and equations, so keep them clean and make them count.)
October 25th (details will be forthcoming) will be some inter-club competition where we have the chance of winning $500 for our club! Anyone interested should contact Charla (charlathegreat@gmail.com).
We also have plans in the works for the FUN bus. Our trip to Wendover is scheduled for Saturday, November 8th (though there will be another one in spring if you can't make this one). It will be $18 a person, but you get $5 back in cash, free buffet, and a fun pack, plus all the fun you can make yourself. Sign ups will be at the next meeting.
Finally- our meeting place (the major's room) will be getting an upgrade! Free furniture will be kindly donated by the Honor's Department by the end of this year. We'll have Thank You cards to sign next meeting as well.
